Samsung's 5K Odyssey G80HF Gaming Monitor Drops to $599.99

US retailers are currently discounting Samsung's 27-inch Odyssey G80HF, a gaming monitor with a 5K resolution. Amazon and the camera and electronics store B&H Photo are selling it for $599.99, which The Verge, a technology news site, says is $100 below the model's previous best price.

Many 5K monitors target Mac users looking for a cheaper alternative to Apple's Studio Display while keeping its 218ppi pixel density. The G80HF stands out for its gaming features.

Specifications

The monitor's Fast IPS panel supports two modes: 5K at a refresh rate of up to 180Hz, or 1440p at up to 360Hz. Samsung advertises compatibility with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium, which keep the display's refresh rate in step with the graphics card's frame output. There is one DisplayPort 2.1 port (Samsung does not state its bandwidth), two HDMI 2.1 ports, and a USB hub for two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 accessories. The article also highlights the one-millisecond response time, which it describes as uncommon for a 5K monitor at this price.

An alternative

For $200 more, at $799.99, LG's 27-inch UltraGear evo 5K Mini LED monitor is available. It has more dimming zones, higher brightness and USB-C video input with 90W power delivery for charging a connected device. Its dual-mode refresh rates are lower, at 165Hz and 330Hz.
