Los Angeles, United States – Tens of thousands of fans descended on SoFi Stadium on Sunday to witness the United States’ 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their World Cup opener. Many donned extravagant outfits featuring US flag colors, from striped dungarees to star-spangled trousers. Alex Saldivar, a 23-year-old fan draped in a US flag, could hardly contain his excitement. “This is a dream come true, a serious dream come true,” he said, swaying from side to side.

The stadium, initially half-empty, filled to over 70,000 spectators by kickoff. The atmosphere electrified when Christian Pulisic’s first-half display energised the crowd, and goals from Folarin Balogun (two) and Giovanni Reyna sealed the win. The opening ceremony featured performances by Future, Rema, and Katy Perry.

Security was tight, with multiple agencies including the TSA, DEA, and LA County Sheriff’s Department present. Celebrities like Tom Cruise and David Beckham drew cheers. Despite reports that President Donald Trump might attend, he did not, to the apparent relief of many in liberal Los Angeles.

While ticket prices and Trump’s travel policies may have dampened some buzz, the tournament delivered joy and togetherness. Fans like Michele Churchill, who traveled from Virginia, called it a “bucket list” event and boldly predicted the US would win the cup.
