Diesel fuel leaked at a Virši filling station in the Sarkandaugava district of Riga on Wednesday, 21 October, during a fuel delivery. A video posted on TikTok and information released by the news agency LETA document the incident. The spill occurred on the station's grounds, and the authorities rate its environmental impact as negligible.

What happened

According to the information released, a technical fault during the delivery caused the leak. It was reportedly stopped quickly, with the responsible services called in immediately and the necessary safety measures taken. Together with those services, workers are continuing to collect the spilled fuel and clean up the site. The station kept serving customers.

Environmental assessment

Aija Jalinska, head of the public relations department at the State Environmental Service (VVD), said the diesel spilled onto a hard surface. Runoff from it is channelled to a separator that removes sand and petroleum products. "Given the circumstances of the incident, the environmental impact is assessed as minor," the VVD representative said.

The service has asked the station operator to provide details on the volume of diesel that leaked. The operator must also report on the measures already taken and those planned to collect the substance and subsequently dispose of it.

Reaction on social media

Internet users also commented on the video showing the spill. Some responded with humour, for example writing about "free fuel" and pre-election promises. Others asked how nobody ignited the fumes in the air, or suggested fuel prices might rise again soon. The video contains uncensored language.
