Lampa Festival to Discuss Cancer Prevention and Screening
At the Lampa festival in Cēsis, a discussion will explore cancer screening effectiveness, genetic testing, and a balanced approach to oncology prevention.

What's Happening?
During the Lampa conversation festival on July 10-11 in Cēsis, experts will gather for a discussion on cancer prevention. The session will be moderated by Marta Augucēviča, project manager at the Breast Disease Center of Paula Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital.
Participants and Topics
Panelists include Anda Ķīvīte-Urtāne, director of Riga Stradiņš University’s Institute of Public Health; journalist and author Inita Sila; breast surgeon and oncologist Arvīds Irmejs; medical geneticist Daiga Mūrmane; and Elīna Dimiņa, director of the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
The discussion will cover the effectiveness of cancer screenings, the role of genetic tests in prevention and risk assessment, and whether knowing one’s inherited risk brings reassurance or anxiety. Radical prevention measures, such as organ removal in certain cases, will also be addressed. Participants will examine contradictions between people who live long despite unhealthy habits and those who develop cancer despite a healthy lifestyle.
Goal
The aim is to foster a pragmatic, evidence-based understanding of personal choices and medical capabilities, avoiding panic and false hopes. The Lampa festival will feature around 400 events across 66 venues.
