Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital has successfully performed the 50th heart transplant in Latvia. The patient is in satisfactory condition and is scheduled to be discharged from the hospital this week, according to hospital representative Vineta Kļaviņa.

Associate Professor Uldis Strazdiņš, head of acute cardiac surgery at the Heart Surgery Center, noted that the 50 transplants demonstrate the maturity of the center and its staff. He expressed joy that the patient, a young person, will soon leave the hospital. Strazdiņš emphasized that long hours and accumulated experience prepare specialists for various professional challenges. He also thanked the donor's family for their decision to donate organs, allowing lives to be saved.

The hospital highlights this as a collective achievement of Latvia's healthcare system. Intensive care specialists play a key role in identifying potential donors, while the National Transplantation Coordination Service ensures the continuity of the donation process.

Baiba Barone, chief cardiologist at the Heart Surgery Center, explained that for patients with severe heart failure, transplantation offers a chance to return to life with significantly improved quality. She stressed the importance of collaboration among doctors, nurses, coordinators, rehabilitation teams, and the patient's family.

Professor Romāns Lācis, who performed Latvia's first heart transplant in 2002 and is the founder of the program, called the 50th transplant a significant milestone. He urged the government and public to continue supporting the program to save more lives. Professor Pēteris Stradiņš, head of the Heart Surgery Center, attributed the success to the team's experience and dedicated program development.

Currently, 27 patients with transplanted hearts live in Latvia, monitored by Stradiņš Hospital and the Children's Clinical University Hospital. The longest survival after a heart transplant in Latvia is 19 years.
