Face Recognition Is Becoming Standard on Dating Apps
Facing a wave of AI-generated fake profiles, dating apps are increasingly requiring users to verify their identity through face scans, though experts warn this creates new privacy risks.
Dating apps are grappling with a growing wave of AI-generated fake accounts, scams and voice cloning. Tinder reported that in 2025, 98 percent of its content-moderation actions targeted fake accounts, scamming and spam, prompting the company to expand moderation for its 60 million global users. The problem extends across the industry: according to the FBI, nearly half of US online daters have been targeted by scams, and romance scams cost Americans more than $4 billion between 2015 and 2025.
In response, more than a dozen major dating apps and sites now use face recognition to verify users, relying on liveness checks, video selfies or biometric ID. Tinder launched its mandatory Face Check tool for new members in October 2025, and parent company Match Group is now extending the requirement to existing users in core markets including the US and UK.
One company driving this shift is Tools for Humanity, which partnered with Tinder in April to offer World ID, a biometric system based on iris scanning through a dedicated device. The feature remains optional for users for now.
Privacy concerns
While companies claim biometric data is encrypted or not retained, cybersecurity researcher Katie Moussouris argues that face scanning offers only an illusion of security rather than a real guarantee of a user's identity. Technology law professor Woodrow Hartzog warns that normalizing face scans in everyday online activity risks acclimating the public to broader surveillance. He points to Utah's State-Endorsed Digital Identity law, which took effect in May and is considered one of the strongest attempts yet to limit how much personal data companies can demand from users.
