Active cyclone to bring heavy rain and strong winds to Latvia on Saturday
Meteorologists warn that an active cyclone will reach Latvia on Saturday, August 22, bringing heavy rain, strong wind and a possible thunderstorm. Parts of Zemgale and Vidzeme could see roughly a month's worth of rain in a single day.

Forecasters warn that an active cyclone will move into Latvia from the south this Saturday, August 22, bringing heavy rain and strong wind to much of the country. A storm and thunderstorm are also possible. Meteorologists note that forecasts regarding the cyclone's exact path and strength could still change, so residents are advised to keep track of updated forecasts.
Timing of the worst weather
According to current data, heavy rain showers are expected to begin on Saturday morning, with the most unpleasant conditions arriving in the afternoon and evening. In Vidzeme and northern Latgale, however, the strongest winds may not hit until the night from Saturday into Sunday.
Heaviest rain expected in Zemgale and Vidzeme
Current forecasts indicate that Zemgale and Vidzeme will see the most intensive rainfall, with totals potentially reaching 40 to 70 millimetres. In some areas, that amount of rain could fall within a single day — roughly equivalent to what typically falls over an entire month.
Wind strength still uncertain
Forecasts about wind strength currently vary. It is possible that on Saturday evening, as winds shift to come from the north and west, gusts in the central and eastern parts of the country could exceed 20 metres per second in several locations.
The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre is likely to issue an orange-level warning for part of the country, which will also be distributed via cell broadcast alerts. Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates.
The weather pattern is expected to change again next week, as an anticyclone strengthens its influence. From Tuesday or Wednesday onward, conditions should turn mostly dry, with warmer temperatures expected in the latter half of the week.
