This Day in History: The Korean War Begins
On June 25, 1950, the North Korean communist regime launched a war to unify the Korean peninsula under its control.

A Historical Moment
Similar to Europe after World War II, the presence of the Soviet army in northern Korea led to the establishment of a communist totalitarian regime. This regime attempted to subjugate all of Korea, sparking an international conflict – the Korean War.
The Start of the War
The war began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel. The conflict lasted until 1953 and caused millions of casualties, but a formal peace treaty was never signed.
