Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said at a joint press conference with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul in Kyiv that Ukraine has a number of creative ideas for reviving the peace process amid Russia's ongoing war of aggression.

The statement was reported by Ukrainian news agency Interfax-Ukraine, as cited by European Pravda.

Sybiha said the negotiation process is currently in a pause and needs to be reinvigorated as much as possible, including through greater involvement from the United States. He stressed that without American participation and leadership, achieving a just peace in the current situation is unrealistic.

Zelenskyy raised the issue with Trump

Sybiha noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had already discussed this matter with US President Donald Trump during their recent meeting in Washington. He added that Ukraine is looking forward to the arrival of the American negotiating team.

The minister also said he and Wadephul discussed Europe's role in the peace effort during their meeting. According to Sybiha, the new political and diplomatic season should focus above all on ending the war, with Russian President Vladimir Putin being essentially the only obstacle to doing so.

Background

Zelenskyy had earlier said greater US involvement in the peace plan is needed, since Russia is unwilling to end the war. On 1 August, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said diplomatic efforts would be made in the coming weeks to determine whether peace talks between Ukraine and Russia could be restarted. Media reports have suggested that Trump's special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, may visit Kyiv during Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations.
