Singapore bans Massive Attack members over Palestinian flag at concert

Singapore police have said that two members of the band Massive Attack, who held a Palestinian flag on stage during Wednesday's concert, are now banned from entering the country. After completing an investigation and consulting with prosecutors, the two men received stern warnings.

Singapore is known for strict rules on public speech and assembly. Displaying foreign flags, state emblems or banners without permission is prohibited. A video spreading online showed two musicians on stage with a Palestinian flag, prompting police to open an inquiry.

According to police, the event organizer had previously confirmed the license conditions, but during the performance two band members displayed a foreign flag and one shouted "Free Palestine". The media regulator is investigating possible breaches of license conditions. In view of the entry ban, it will not approve any future applications by the band to perform in Singapore.

Police also urged the public, including foreigners, to refrain from bringing foreign politics into the country, saying this could threaten social cohesion and the rule of law.

Massive Attack is known for criticizing Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and has used its prominence to support Palestinians. In April, lead singer Robert del Naja was among more than 200 people detained at a protest in London's Trafalgar Square supporting the banned activist group Palestine Action.
