Cincinnati Open: Zverev falls in round of 16 to American Paul

German third seed Alexander Zverev suffered a surprise three-set loss to American Tommy Paul in the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open. Zverev had entered the match as the bookmakers' favorite but failed to convert a match point in the second set.

Germany's top player Alexander Zverev, currently ranked third in the ATP standings, lost overnight to American Tommy Paul, a former world number eight. The match finished 6:4, 6:7, 4:6 in the American's favor.

Before the match, bookmakers considered Zverev the clear favorite, offering odds of 1.35 on his victory. However, the contest swung in Paul's direction. In the second-set tiebreak, Zverev came within a point of victory, leading 6-5 and holding a match point, but ultimately lost the tiebreak 6-8. In the third set, Zverev again took the lead at 4:2, but went on to lose the set 4:6, and with it the match.
