Scarlets report £2.1m loss in 'challenging' time

The Welsh rugby region posted its third consecutive loss of over £2 million, while turnover fell and debt remains above £10 million, as the club navigates a challenging environment with potential reduction of professional teams.

Scarlets have announced a financial loss of £2.1 million for the 2024-2025 season, according to the club's latest accounts.

This marks the third year running that the Welsh region has recorded a deficit exceeding £2 million. The loss is an improvement on the previous year's £2.6 million shortfall.

Revenue dropped from £11.3 million to £10.2 million, with declines in gate receipts, sponsorship, and funding from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU). In response, the club made a 10% cut in spending, reducing the wage bill from £8.24 million to £6.94 million. A new share issue generated £940,000.

However, the club's debt remains over £10 million, primarily owed to the WRU and Carmarthenshire County Council, which owns the Parc y Scarlets stadium.

The financial report also highlights the 'challenging' and 'deeply uncertain' operating environment for professional rugby in Wales. The WRU is considering reducing the number of professional clubs from four to three by the 2028-29 season, potentially putting Scarlets in competition with the Ospreys for a west Wales licence.

Scarlets chairman Simon Muderack noted the review has created an unsettling backdrop but expressed confidence in the club's future.

Scarlets are the only Welsh side not yet signed to the Professional Rugby Agreement (PRA), though the club expects to finalise it soon, which would help repay £4.8 million in Covid-related loans to the WRU. The report also mentions continued debt of £2.6 million to Carmarthenshire Council.

No mention is made of any legal action regarding the WRU's takeover of Cardiff or of US-based investor House of Luxury LLC. In April 2026, Scarlets stated they secured further investment for future stability.
