Latvian teacher says pay recalculation cut her salary by a further €200

A Latvian teacher wrote on the social platform Threads that, after inaccurate September workload calculations and a recalculation, her salary was cut by another €200. She is now considering changing jobs, while other commenters criticise the uncertainty in teachers' pay.

A teacher in Latvia has shared her experience on the social media platform Threads: after the school-year break, she learned that her salary would be reduced by a further €200. The news has made her consider changing workplaces. The post was reported by LA.LV, the website of the newspaper Latvijas Avīze. It touches on how predictable teachers' pay is, a subject already debated in Latvia.

What the teacher wrote

The teacher says that at her school the September tarifikācija, meaning the calculation of teachers' workloads and pay, was drawn up inaccurately, so a recalculation was requested. As a result, she received a notice that her pay would be cut. She stresses that the budget is limited: to add for one person, something has to be taken from another. In her view, it is unlikely that many other professions leave people not knowing how much they will earn.

Reactions from commenters

Other users joined the discussion. Ieva called the situation terrible and expressed surprise that the system continues to exist as if labour law did not apply to teachers. Līva asked how anyone expects to attract new staff with such calculations, and noted that teachers year after year do not know their salary in September.

Ance, who is currently on parental leave, said she may have to look at other career directions in future. Veronika recalled that she once left a municipal school for another job because of pay, but later returned to teaching at a private school, where the salary is fixed. Armands said that the country's priorities are wrong in many areas.

Earlier cases

LA.LV has covered the topic before. In October 2025 it reported on history teacher Kaspars Spunde, who made public his first pay for part of September: €112.19. That sparked a wide debate about how hard it is for teachers to predict their income. In March 2026 the site wrote about pay problems and teachers' concerns that raises do not always solve the underlying issues.
