Moss creator Polyarc shuts down after nearly 12 years
Seattle-based VR studio Polyarc, known for the Moss series, has closed its doors. At least 29 former employees are now seeking new jobs.
Video game studio Polyarc, the developer behind the virtual reality series Moss and Moss: Book II, has ceased operations. The news was announced on the company's LinkedIn page, accompanied by a reverse recruiting sheet showing that at least 29 former staff members are currently looking for work.
In its announcement, the studio said that after nearly 12 years of working together on video games, the team's journey has come to an end. Polyarc thanked everyone who had been part of the studio and said its work was now complete.
An influential VR franchise
Based in Seattle, Polyarc became known as an early standout in virtual reality gaming with the Moss series, which combined traditional action-adventure gameplay with a camera system letting players peer around diorama-style levels while controlling Quill, the mouse protagonist. The original Moss launched on PlayStation VR and was later ported to Oculus Quest as a launch title. Moss: Book II followed on PSVR, Quest, SteamVR and Pico. The studio also produced one of the few titles available for Apple Vision Pro, a multiplayer strategy game called Glassbreakers.
In May 2026, Polyarc attempted to reach a wider, non-VR audience with Moss: The Forgotten Relic, which bundled the series into one release and reworked the gameplay so it could be played without a headset. It remains unclear how well that title sold, but it apparently wasn't enough to sustain the studio.
Broader shifts in the VR industry may have played a larger role. Meta this year began pulling back from its metaverse ambitions in favor of AI products, shutting down several of its own VR studios in the process — a retreat that likely made funding for new VR projects harder to secure across the industry. Despite the closure, all of Polyarc's games remain available for purchase.
