Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system includes a hidden menu that gives users quick access to important management and troubleshooting tools. Known as the Quick Link Menu or the Windows-X Menu, it removes the need to memorize many hotkeys or dig through Settings to find specific tools.

How to open the menu

The menu opens by pressing the Win+X keys together. It appears on the left side of the screen, directly above the Windows logo on the taskbar. It contains familiar features also found in the Start menu or on the taskbar, such as Settings, File Explorer, Search and shutdown options. It also lists tools that are otherwise buried in Settings or reachable only through other hotkeys: Installed Apps, System, Power Options, Network Connections, Mobility Center, Event Viewer, Disk Management, Computer Management and Task Manager.

Customizing the menu

The layout can be changed by typing %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsWinX into the File Explorer address bar. Three folders there hold the shortcuts that make up the menu. Shortcuts can be moved between the folders, renamed by renaming the shortcut files, and added by dragging apps into one of the folders.

Most useful troubleshooting tools

Task Manager lets users monitor background processes and close programs that have stopped responding. Its Processes tab shows activity, while the Startup tab allows users to review startup processes and disable nonessential, resource-heavy ones.

Event Viewer can help track down elusive PC problems through the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. For random crashes, file corruption or suspected hardware faults, users can open Event Viewer from the Win+X menu, go to Window Logs > System > Filter Current Log, and select MemoryDiagnostics-Results under Event Sources. This produces a readout of any existing issues.

Disk Management shows the status of the disk partitions active on a computer. Mobility Center lets laptop users configure display, keyboard and wireless settings.
