Smiltene library hosts exhibition of Little Prince books in various European languages
From September 14 to 30, Smiltene library's Children's Department is showing an exhibition featuring a European Commission collection of "The Little Prince" books in different languages, marking European Day of Languages.
From September 14 to 30, visitors to the Children's Department of Smiltene library can view the exhibition "Travel through the World of Languages!". It presents a book collection assembled by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation, dedicated to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's world-famous story "The Little Prince". The exhibition was created in cooperation with EUROPE DIRECT Austrumvidzeme and is linked to European Day of Languages.
"The Little Prince" is one of the most translated literary works in the world, published in more than 600 languages and dialects. The exhibition lets visitors see how this beloved story sounds and appears in various European languages.
A touring exhibition
The "Travel through the World of Languages!" exhibition began touring Latvian cities in spring 2023. Each year it presents new collections of children's books — previous editions featured books about Pippi Longstocking, Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio and other beloved literary characters. The European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation creates these collections to raise interest in Europe's linguistic and cultural diversity and to highlight the importance of translation.
European Day of Languages has been marked annually on September 26 since 2001. It aims to highlight the richness of Europe's languages and cultures and to encourage lifelong language learning.
Children, young people and adults alike are invited to visit the exhibition at the Smiltene library's Children's Department, located at Gaujas iela 1.
