Smiltene Technical School recently hosted a masterclass where third-year confectionery students learned to prepare sweet 'potato' cakes, a traditional pastry treat. The session was led by Marika Bērziņa-Frēliha, head pastry chef at home confectionery business 'Mur kūkas' and a board member of the Latvian Confectioners' Club.
Speaking to local outlet 'Ziemeļlatvija,' school teacher Inese Veidemane said the students greatly enjoyed the class, showing strong enthusiasm and engagement throughout the session. According to Veidemane, students would welcome more such hands-on classes, as they offer a way to learn outside the usual academic routine.
Practical industry experience
Masterclasses involving industry professionals give confectionery students the chance to see real working techniques and current trends in the pastry field firsthand. Such collaboration between educational institutions and industry specialists helps students complement their theoretical knowledge with practical skills useful for their future careers.
Smiltene Technical School is one of the vocational education institutions in the Vidzeme region, training specialists in various fields, including confectionery.
