Snap's Specs: Impressive Tech Marred by Uncomfortable Design
Snap's new AR glasses offer impressive features, but photos reveal a bulky, heavy design that may deter users. The Vergecast discusses whether the specs can overcome their physical shortcomings.

Snap’s new augmented reality glasses, the Specs, represent a significant leap in face-computer technology. Unlike typical VR headsets, they are not overly large and do not require a separate charging puck. Thanks to Snap’s long history of developing AR lenses, the Specs are expected to offer a wide range of features immediately. Priced at $2,195, they are expensive, but Snap appears to be at the forefront of this emerging market.
However, the physical design raises concerns. Photographs of Snap CEO Evan Spiegel wearing the Specs show oversized, heavy stems pressing against his ears. Images of models and athletes are carefully composed to hide the weight. This leads to a fundamental question: does the technical prowess matter if consumers are unwilling to wear them?
Many details remain unknown, including how the glasses feel when worn. On this episode of The Vergecast, hosts David Pierce and Nilay Patel debate whether the Specs can be worth the discomfort. They consider what experiences would justify the inconvenience and whether the four-hour battery life is a flaw or a feature that limits wear time. The device is scheduled to ship this fall.
Later, the hosts discuss Fox’s $22 billion acquisition of Roku, exploring what it means for the entertainment industry. They examine the future of both companies and question whether Roku can remain successful if it loses independence. The conversation also touches on the Go90 Scale of Doomed Streaming Services applied to Tubi and The Roku Channel. Additional topics in the lightning round include the Hype Desk, Brendan Carr, Facebook’s AI Mode, and Matter 1.6.
