State Language Center warns Jurmala cafe: social media posts must primarily be in Latvian
The owner of a cafe on Jurmala beach received a warning from the State Language Center after posting videos in Russian on Facebook. She now must review her content to comply with language requirements.

The owner of a cafe on Jurmala beach had previously believed that private businesses could freely use Russian in their social media posts. However, she recently received a letter from the State Language Center (VVC), prompting her to reconsider her approach.
The center stated that content on social networks, particularly Facebook, must be primarily in Latvian. Following the warning, the entrepreneur began revising her published materials. The news was reported by the program “Discuss in the Evening.”
This case highlights ongoing debates about language use in private social media accounts and how strictly the State Language Center enforces Latvian language requirements in the digital space.
