Social Democrats Consider Ülle Madise as Compromise Presidential Candidate
Estonia's Social Democratic Party (SDP) is considering Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as a potential compromise candidate for president, hoping she can secure support from both the coalition and part of the opposition.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) sees Chancellor of Justice Ülle Madise as the most suitable compromise candidate for the presidency. This was stated by SDP board member Tanel Kiik in a radio interview on Wednesday, July 1, commenting on the outcomes of the party leadership's meeting held on Monday.
Kiik said that Madise is not solely a coalition or opposition candidate but could be acceptable to a wide range of political forces. According to him, the Social Democrats have already conducted informal consultations with representatives of most parliamentary parties. Only the Conservative People's Party (EKRE) has publicly indicated it would not support Madise.
Kiik emphasized that a final decision on nominating a candidate has not been made yet—the matter has been discussed at the party leadership level, but official nomination requires a decision by the SDP's parliamentary group. He also noted that he has not personally discussed this with Madise, but confirmed that politicians have already had contacts with the Chancellor of Justice.
Representatives of other parties have expressed different views. MEP Jana Toom from the Centre Party said that discussion of Madise's candidacy is no longer a secret. MEP Jüri Ratas from Isamaa called Madise a strong candidate but stressed that the future president must enjoy broad public support.
Official candidate nomination will take place from August 21 to 24. The SDP plans to use July for negotiations to find a candidate who can gain wide parliamentary backing. Incumbent President Alar Karis has already confirmed he will not run for a second term. EKRE announced its candidate, party vice-chairman Mart Helme, back in May.
