Fewer mosquitoes this year in Latvia – experts blame dry spring

Many residents in Latvia have observed an unusually low number of mosquitoes this summer. In social media posts and everyday conversations, people express surprise at the lack of these insects, with some even reporting not having been bitten once all season.

Experts explain that the dry spring weather is the main cause. Mosquitoes lay eggs in or near water, and their larvae develop in stagnant water bodies. This year's prolonged drought created unfavorable conditions for larvae, causing many to die before reaching adulthood.

This phenomenon is not uncommon – dry springs typically result in fewer mosquitoes, while wet seasons lead to outbreaks. According to specialists, this year's dry spell has given people a break from the usual nuisance, allowing them to enjoy outdoor activities without constant buzzing and bites. However, if the weather returns to a wetter pattern, mosquito populations could quickly bounce back.
