Consumer confidence in Finland's economy continued to decline in October. According to data published on 27 October by Statistics Finland, the national statistics agency, the consumer confidence indicator dropped to minus 9.7 points. It stood at minus 4.9 in September and minus 3 in August. A year earlier, in October 2025, the figure was minus 7.6 points.

Views on the economy

Finns rated the economic situation of both their own households and the country as a whole even lower. Some 61% of respondents believe the Finnish economy has worsened over the past year, while only 13% think it has grown stronger. Expectations for the next 12 months are also mostly negative: 40% expect the country's economic situation to deteriorate and 22% hope for an improvement. Meanwhile, 26% expect their own financial position to improve, and 21% fear it will worsen.

Unemployment and prices

Fear of unemployment remains one of the main reasons for pessimism. 47% of respondents expect unemployment to rise over the coming year. Among those who are employed, 29% think the risk of losing their job or being temporarily out of work has increased, while 35% say they have no fear of unemployment at all.

Concern about rising prices has also grown. Consumers estimated that prices rose by 5.2% in the year to October and could increase by a further 4.6% over the next 12 months. 70% of respondents expect prices to keep rising in the coming months at least at the current pace.

Big purchases

Amid economic uncertainty, Finns are less willing to plan large purchases. Only 12% consider the present a good time to buy expensive goods. Over the next year, 40% intend to cut spending on durable goods, and only 11% plan to increase it.

The gloomiest assessments were recorded in Northern Finland, where the confidence indicator stood at minus 13.4 points. Among socio-economic groups, the unemployed and pensioners were the most negative. The survey ran from 1 to 18 October and covered 1,171 residents of Finland.
