Sony's latest PS5 Pro update makes enhanced PSSR the default upscaler
Sony's newest PlayStation 5 system update automatically enables the enhanced PSSR image quality setting for PS5 Pro owners, though only games already built around the original PSSR technology are affected.
Sony has released PlayStation 5 system software update 26.06-14.00.00, which turns on the "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" setting by default for PS5 Pro consoles. As a result, games built on the original PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology will now automatically use Sony's newer, enhanced upscaler, without players needing to find and toggle a somewhat obscure setting themselves.
There's an important limitation: games that don't already support PSSR are unaffected. The update does not add AI upscaling across the entire PlayStation library, and not every title carrying a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge actually relies on PSSR in the first place.
The enhanced PSSR version and its system-level override were originally introduced in March. Sony refers to it as "upgraded" or "enhanced" PSSR rather than PSSR 2.0, and it takes a different approach to both the neural network and the underlying algorithm compared to the original. Until this update, PS5 Pro owners who wanted the enhanced model applied to older PSSR-based games had to switch on the setting manually.
Cleaning up the original version's flaws
PSSR is Sony's machine-learning upscaler for PS5 Pro, letting games render at a lower resolution before scaling up to a higher output, which helps developers boost visuals without the full performance cost of native higher-resolution rendering. The original release wasn't flawless — some games showed shimmering textures and distortion around fine text. According to Sony, the enhanced version delivers sharper fine-detail clarity, better image reconstruction, and improved stability during motion, with developers reporting less flickering and fewer afterimages.
The technology stems from Project Amethyst, Sony's graphics research collaboration with AMD. Players who notice unexpected visual issues can disable the override under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, keeping older PSSR titles on their original tech. Games also need to run in Pro or Quality mode to benefit.
The same update brings other additions, including an on-screen voice chat indicator showing who is speaking, plus a new Community Activity widget on the Welcome Hub featuring trending and top multiplayer games.
