Sony has announced major changes that will affect the future of physical media. Starting in 2028, the company will stop manufacturing game discs for PlayStation consoles, and the PS3 and PlayStation Vita digital stores will be shut down over the next year. This decision is part of a long-term shift toward digital distribution that began two decades ago with online game sales.

Sony representative Sid Shuman stated that the transition aligns with consumer trends, as most players prefer digital versions. Company data shows that in the last fiscal year (April 2025 to March 2026), nearly 80% of all PS4 and PS5 game purchases were digital, rising to 85% in the first quarter of 2026. Third-party publishers report even higher figures—Capcom indicated that 93% of its game sales were digital copies.

The move raises concerns about game preservation. Without physical discs, players lose the ability to resell, trade, or lend games. Digital games are licensed, not owned, and platform holders can revoke access. Closing the PS3 and Vita stores means approximately 2,200 digital-only games will no longer be available for purchase, with 138 being exclusive and potentially disappearing entirely.

Video Game History Foundation director Frank Cifaldi noted that museums and archives have long prepared for this scenario, but the industry must offer solutions for preserving digital content. He criticized the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) for opposing copyright law reforms that would facilitate archiving.

Sony has promised that users can still download previously purchased content after store closures, but added "for the foreseeable future," suggesting servers may eventually shut down completely. This move contrasts with Sony's stance in 2013, when it mocked Microsoft's plans for online requirements by demonstrating game lending via physical discs.

While the transition may have been inevitable, the timing could benefit Microsoft, which has confirmed that its next console, Project Helix, will run PC games and may support third-party stores, thus alleviating some preservation concerns.
