Meta announced this week that WhatsApp will introduce usernames, allowing users to keep their phone numbers private. The feature is not yet active but will roll out globally over the next few months. Reservations for usernames are now open, prompting a scramble for desired handles.

How to reserve a username

Reservations are currently available only on mobile versions of WhatsApp. If your app is updated, you may receive a notification. To access the menu manually:

  • iPhone: Tap "You" button, go to your profile, select "Create Username" or "Reserve Username" (depending on rollout stage), then tap "Save" > "Done".
  • Android: Tap the three-dot menu, go to Settings, then your profile, select "Create Username" or "Reserve Username", then "Save" > "Done".

Restrictions

Usernames must be unique, between 3 and 35 characters, and can contain lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. All-number usernames are not allowed, and "restricted words or phrases" are prohibited. If someone else takes your desired name, you must choose another unless that person changes their handle; after a change or deletion, the name becomes available again after 14 days. Meta has not specified how many times you can change your username but will impose a limit eventually. You can also use your same Facebook or Instagram username if it is available.

Scam concerns

Meta plans measures like an authorization key for first-time contacts via username, but there are worries that unverified names could increase fraud. Meta will not allow just anyone to claim to be a celebrity, but it hasn't detailed how it will prevent copycats. India, WhatsApp's largest market with over 500 million users, has called for a freeze on the rollout until Meta provides more justifications for combating fraud risks.
