SpaceXAI apologizes for outage that hit Grok and other 'compute partners'

SpaceXAI's Memphis data center experienced a technical problem Thursday morning that took the Grok chatbot offline for more than three hours. The company issued a public apology to Grok users as well as to unnamed "compute partners" who also appeared to be affected.

In a post on X, SpaceXAI apologized for issues Grok users experienced following the morning outage at the Memphis compute center, adding that it also wanted to apologize to impacted partners. The company said all systems had since been restored and were functioning normally.

According to the company's status page, Grok was down for three and a half hours starting at 6:30AM PT. The incident, labeled a "models outage," affected Grok on X as well as its Android and iOS apps. SpaceXAI did not disclose the cause, though Elon Musk said in a separate post that the company was taking corrective action to prevent a repeat occurrence.

Other platforms also affected

It remains unclear exactly which SpaceXAI compute partners were affected, but the timing lines up with issues reported by other AI platforms Thursday morning. Anthropic's Claude also experienced problems starting around 6:30AM PT, with the company's status page citing elevated errors across multiple models. The issue, affecting Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Opus 5, was marked resolved by 9:16AM PT. Anthropic has not said whether the problem was linked to SpaceXAI's data center, though the two companies signed a deal earlier this year for Anthropic to lease compute from Musk's AI firm.

OpenAI also suffered an early-morning outage Thursday that caused elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex. Users began reporting problems around 7:30AM PT, according to Downdetector, with the issue resolved by 9:55AM PT. OpenAI did not specify a cause. Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI immediately responded to requests for comment.
