Spain wildfires: Village at epicentre 'completely charred', 12 dead
Wildfires in southern Spain have killed 12 people and burned 6,600 hectares, with the BBC reporting a 'sea of black' in the village of Bédar.

BBC journalist Nick Beake visited the village of Bédar in the Almería province of southern Spain, which is at the epicentre of the wildfires. He saw homes razed to the ground and described a 'sea of black'. The blaze spread rapidly through the region on Thursday. Hundreds of firefighters have been battling the fires, which have claimed the lives of 12 people. According to local authorities, wildfires have burned through 6,600 hectares (16,300 acres). A sustained heatwave with temperatures of around 40°C (104°F) has caused wildfires across Southern Europe this summer, particularly in France, Portugal and Spain.
