A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia's Flores region early Saturday, causing buildings and homes to collapse and sending residents fleeing into the streets. Footage captured in the town of Maumere shows people running for safety as the ground shook, while part of the terminal building at Lorens Say Port gave way and collapsed.

Authorities confirmed that at least 20 people died as a result of the quake. Six others were injured, and two people remained missing following a landslide that the earthquake triggered. The initial tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks in the hours after.

Tsunami alert lifted

A tsunami warning was issued for parts of eastern Indonesia immediately after the quake as a precaution, but it was later withdrawn after monitoring showed no significant changes in sea levels.

The disaster underscores Indonesia's vulnerability as a nation situated along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a zone known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
