Gamers rig workaround to run Nvidia's DLSS 5 on console-only GTA VI

A Reddit user has proposed a setup that routes a PlayStation 5's video through a PC to apply Nvidia's DLSS 5. A GTA VI trailer was used as a demo, with mixed visual results.

Some gamers are experimenting with ways to bring PC graphics card power to the upcoming video game Grand Theft Auto VI, even though the title is console-exclusive and will not be available on PC this month. The effort, reported by the technology site Ars Technica, centers on Nvidia's DLSS 5, a technology that uses AI-powered "neural rendering".

On an explicitly unmoderated GTA VI subreddit, a user going by RevolutionaryBus8208 described the proposed setup. A PlayStation 5 console is connected to a PC through a 4K capture card. On the PC, the signal is processed by Veyra, an open source tool able to apply DLSS 5 to video content. DLSS frame generation is also used to raise the 30 frames-per-second source to 90 fps, and the output is then sent back to a 4K television. In theory, this gives a console game some of the benefits of a powerful PC graphics card.

Results on the trailer

To show what the approach can do, the user ran the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look trailer, published in August, through Veyra. The processed version looks somewhat better in places, with sharper background elements, subtler shadows and more believable light scattering on some surfaces.

However, it also appears a little washed out compared with the deeper blacks of the original, and in some scenes it arguably suffers from an unnaturally smooth "soap opera effect". The frame generation process also causes occasional graphical artifacts and glitches.

The source article describes the result as an interesting proof of concept, showing how far DLSS 5 has come since the early, poorly received memes that circulated online earlier this year.
