Streaming platform Paramount+ has officially approved a new series that continues the story of the 1995 American romantic comedy “Clueless”. Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone will once again play the lead character, Beverly Hills schoolgirl Cher Horowitz. The film is regarded as one of the most popular teen movies of the 1990s, and Cher as a pop culture icon. The project brings the characters back to screens after 31 years.

What the series is about

The story is set roughly 30 years after the events of the film. Cher, once fashion-obsessed and wealthy, is now a successful businesswoman and a mother. Her life seems to be in order, but that changes when her daughter reaches high school age. Raising a teenager turns out to be harder than being one, and Cher once again finds herself as bewildered as she was in her youth.

Creative team

Amy Heckerling, who directed and wrote the original film, is involved and will serve as an executive producer alongside Silverstone. The scripts are being written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, known for the teen series “Gossip Girl” and “The O.C.”. Screenwriter Jordan Weiss has also joined the creative team.

Path to Paramount+

The project is planned as a six-episode continuation. It was initially meant to be made for the streaming platform Peacock, but in April this year it became known that it would not go ahead there. Paramount+ later took it over and officially confirmed production in July.

Filming is due to begin in 2027 in Los Angeles, where the original film was also set. No premiere date has been announced, and it is not yet known whether other actors from the original will take part. Alongside Silverstone, the 1995 film starred Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy, who died in 2009.

The film’s plot was inspired by Jane Austen’s novel “Emma”. It follows a wealthy schoolgirl who likes to meddle in other people’s love lives, yet does not always understand her own feelings.
