On July 3, 2026, the Swiss men's national football team beat Algeria 2-0 (1-0) in the first round of the World Cup knockout stage.
Breel Embolo put Switzerland ahead in the 10th minute after receiving a pass from Joël Manzambi, who skillfully dribbled past several opponents in the penalty area.
Switzerland doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half. Algeria failed to clear the ball from their box, and Dan Ndoye scored from distance to make it 2-0.
With this win, Switzerland progresses to the round of 16, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana. This is the first World Cup tournament featuring 48 teams, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. The top two from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advanced to the knockout stage.
The semifinals are scheduled for July 14 and 15. The bronze medal match will be on July 18, and the final on July 19. In the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Argentina became champions by defeating France on penalties.
