Pro-war Rodina party's candidates rejected in Sverdlovsk region, days after it sued to remove antiwar Yabloko from Duma race
The Sverdlovsk region election commission has rejected the pro-war Rodina party's candidate list for local legislative elections over missing documents, days after Rodina's lawsuit got the antiwar Yabloko party barred from Russia's State Duma race.
Election officials in Russia's Sverdlovsk region have turned down the candidate list submitted by the pro-war Rodina party for the regional legislative assembly elections. The regional election commission said Rodina had not provided all the documents required for registration, including signature sheets.
According to the independent outlet 7×7, the same commission registered the Yabloko party for the identical elections just a week earlier. Yabloko is campaigning under the slogan "For peace and freedom, for a life without fear."
A reversal after the Duma case
The rejection comes only days after Russia's Supreme Court, on August 10, removed Yabloko from the State Duma race. That ruling followed a lawsuit brought by Rodina seeking to keep rival parties off the federal ballot. Yabloko remains the only party in Russia running on an explicitly antiwar platform.
In Sverdlovsk, however, the roles have effectively reversed: it is Rodina, not Yabloko, that has been blocked from the ballot, after its own registration paperwork was found incomplete.
