Swan through but Boulter becomes 11th Briton to fall at Wimbledon
Katie Swan became the first British singles player to reach the second round at Wimbledon this year, while Katie Boulter lost to a qualifier on day two, making her the 11th Briton to exit in the first round.

Swan Overcomes Injury Woes to Advance
Katie Swan became the first British singles player to reach the second round at this year's Wimbledon, defeating Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-4. The 27-year-old, who considered retiring in 2024 due to a persistent back injury, secured her first Grand Slam main-draw win since beating the same opponent at Wimbledon in 2018. Swan dropped to the ground in celebration after the match.
The opening day was disastrous for British hopes, with 10 players—including top-ranked Briton Cameron Norrie—losing in the first round. Jack Draper withdrew 24 hours before his match due to injury, and Emma Raducanu pulled out on the eve of the Championships with a stress fracture in her right leg.
Swan delivered a clinical serving performance on Court 16, winning 88% of first-serve points. She did not face a single break point until serving for the match, but held her nerve to seal victory on her fifth match point. She will next face either 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys or American qualifier Kayla Day.
Boulter's Disappointment Against Teenage Qualifier
Katie Boulter became the 11th British singles player to fall at the first hurdle at Wimbledon, losing 6-2, 6-4 to Italian 18-year-old Tyra Caterina Grant. It is Boulter's first opening-round loss at Wimbledon since 2017 and her first-ever defeat to a qualifier at a Grand Slam.
This comes just 18 days after she achieved the biggest win of her career by ranking, defeating world number two Elena Rybakina at Queen's. Against Grant, who had never played a singles match on grass before Wimbledon qualifying this year, Boulter failed to create a single break point, while Grant dropped just three points across her last four service games.
A total of nine British players are scheduled to play on day two at the All England Club. Last year, 13 Britons lost in the first round; the record is 16 in 1988.
