Tado unveils new smart thermostat aimed at Google Nest users
German company Tado has launched the second-generation Smart Thermostat X, hoping to win over European customers who haven't yet replaced their Nest devices since Google's exit from the thermostat market. The new model features a slimmer design and expanded features.
German smart home company Tado has released the second generation of its smart thermostat, the Smart Thermostat X, in an effort to win over European users of Google's Nest devices. Speaking to The Verge, Tado cofounder and managing director Christian Deilmann said that Google's decision last year to shut down servers for its first- and second-generation thermostats already drove significant sales growth for Tado. The third-generation Nest still has at least ten times greater market penetration in Europe, but Deilmann predicts Google will eventually stop supporting that model too.
The new Tado thermostat costs £159.99/€179.99 for a wired starter kit and £169.99/€199.99 for a wireless version. It features a completely redesigned white, square form factor with a circular touch interface that only appears when activated. At 17.8mm thick, it is notably slimmer than both the previous Tado model and the third-generation Nest. The device includes a customizable action button, and the wireless version's rechargeable battery lasts about a year per charge.
New features and connectivity
The Smart Thermostat X works with boilers, heat pumps, and underfloor heating systems, using Matter-over-Thread connectivity to communicate more easily between devices placed throughout a home and to integrate with most smart home platforms. Alongside the new model, Tado is rolling out the ability to manage multiple thermostats across different homes from a single account. The company's hydronic balancing system, used together with its radiator thermostats, has now received TÜV certification, making it eligible for government heat-pump subsidies in certain markets.
This feature requires a subscription to Tado's AI Assist, priced at £3.99 per month or £29.99 per year, which automatically optimizes heating based on weather conditions and home characteristics, including geofencing, open-window detection, and preheating before residents arrive home. Tado also introduced a new energy savings guarantee, allowing customers who don't see sufficient savings within a year to return their products for a full refund. The thermostat is now available through Tado's website and select European retailers.
