The Üle Heli festival, which explores the meaning of sound and the links between different fields of art, was held in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, last weekend. This year's theme, "Sound Is Free", drew attention to the openness of sound and the variety of ways it can be interpreted.

The core of the festival consisted of four concert evenings, each taking its own approach to sound. Over the four days, the audience saw performances by Ekke Västrik; Lithuanian sound artist Adomas Palekas; sound artist Thomas Ankersmit, who is originally from the Netherlands and lives in Berlin; Ukrainian composer Albert Saprykin, who is on a residency at the Estonian Contemporary Music Centre; and many others.

Daytime events

In addition to the evening concerts, various events took place during the day. Throughout the festival, an exhibition was open in the basement hall of the Kanut Guild, prepared by students of the sound art programme in the new media department of the Estonian Academy of Arts.

From Friday to Sunday, the premises of the Contemporary Music Centre hosted lectures, discussions and radio experiments under the "Day Menu" programme. These were connected to the launch of broadcasts by Raadio Tallinn 1965, a radio station from the past that never actually existed.
