The New York Times in Talks to Buy Film Social Network Letterboxd for About $330 Million
The New York Times Company is reportedly in exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd, a social network for film fans, for around $330 million. The newspaper itself reported the talks.

The New York Times Company, the US media group behind The New York Times newspaper, is in exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd, a social network for film lovers, for around $330 million, according to the Times itself. The tech outlet The Verge relayed the report on November 5, 2026.
Letterboxd is a platform where users discuss and share their views on films. Rumors about a possible sale of the company had been circulating for some time. Sony Pictures Entertainment, the film studio, and A24, the independent film company, were also recently rumored to be interested, but the Times Company is now named as the buyer.
Terms under discussion
According to the report, the talks have included the possibility that Letterboxd's co-founders would stay in charge while reporting to a Times Company executive. Letterboxd would likely remain a standalone product for the "foreseeable future." The Times Company would also integrate its advertising technology into the service.
Times Company spokesperson Charlie Stadtlander declined to comment. Letterboxd and its current parent company, Tiny Ltd., did not immediately respond to The Verge's request for comment.
Earlier acquisitions
If the deal goes ahead, it would follow other major purchases by the Times Company. It previously bought the word game Wordle in a deal in "the low seven figures," the product review site Wirecutter for "slightly more than $30 million," and the sports outlet The Athletic for $550 million.
The deal has not been confirmed, and the outcome of the talks is not yet known.
