Court Examines Dispute Over Latvian Spelling in Passport
A Latvian citizen has filed a lawsuit against the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, claiming his name is recorded in his passport in violation of Latvian spelling rules. The case has been heard by judges in two instances.

An unusual legal battle has emerged between a Latvian citizen and the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP). The man argues that his personal name in his passport is written in clear contradiction to Latvian spelling laws, calling it a deliberate and gross state error.
On March 27, 2025, the PMLP's Talsi branch received a request from the man demanding an immediate correction and the issuance of a new passport. He stated that the document's appearance and the recording of his name violate language norms.
The case has reached court, where it has been reviewed by judges in two instances. The central issue is whether authorities may deviate from grammatical rules due to bureaucratic and international requirements.
