Latvian Singer Normunds Rutulis to Face Trial for Drunk Driving Next Year
The Riga City Court will hear the criminal case against singer Normunds Rutulis, accused of driving with a blood alcohol level of 2 per mille and causing a collision, on February 3 at 1 p.m.

According to the prosecution, on the evening of March 14, 2026, Rutulis was driving a Cupra Formentor in Riga with a blood alcohol concentration of 2 per mille. He crossed into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming Mercedes Benz.
The defendant has fully admitted his guilt and expressed remorse. However, the prosecution was unable to reach a plea agreement because Rutulis did not agree to the proposed real prison sentence. The case will proceed to trial under general procedure.
The Criminal Law provides for a penalty of up to one year in prison or probation supervision, in addition to a five-year driving ban. The offender's vehicle is also subject to confiscation. Administrative proceedings have been initiated for causing the traffic accident.
