Festival “Bildes” opens exhibition of artist-decorated cans at Spice mall
An exhibition titled “Kannojam!” (“Let’s Can It!”), part of the “Bildes” music and art festival, has opened at the Spice shopping centre. It features petrol and milk cans decorated by 38 creative figures and runs until 11 November.

An exhibition called “Kannojam!”, part of the “Bildes” music and art festival, has opened at the Spice shopping centre. It presents works by 38 musicians, artists and other creative figures: petrol and milk cans turned into artworks. The exhibition is part of the festival programme, which ends with a concert on 20 November.
How the works were made
The displayed pieces were created at the festival’s summer camp at Jumurda Manor. Participants named include Svens Linga, Arnis Miltiņš, Guntars Mucenieks, Dace Pūce, Ikars Ruņģis, Jānis Vanadziņš, Inese Mailīte, Ivars Mailītis, Velga Vītola and others.
Arvīds Endziņš, associate professor at the Art Academy of Latvia, metal artist and exhibition participant, says the cans have become the home for line and colour this time. In his words, the milk cans recall memories of warm milk at a grandmother’s or a neighbour’s farm, while the fuel can represents a different, industrial and technical world. He stresses that black and white can exist side by side and enrich each other.
Where and how long
The exhibition can be seen on the second floor of the shopping centre until 11 November. It will also be shown in the foyer of the VEF Palace of Culture on 20 November during the festival’s closing concert.
The musical part of the festival
The music programme has already begun: a children’s concert took place at the VEF Palace of Culture last week. A concert by the festival’s musicians and their children is planned there on 25 October, and a blues concert will be held at the “Daile” music hall on 28 October.
