Toxicologist warns: mushroom poisoning symptoms can appear with a delay

During the mushroom-picking season, doctors are urging caution and warning against relying on misleading assumptions about one's health after eating wild mushrooms. Roberts Stašinskis, head of the Intensive Care Clinic at the Eastern Hospital (Austrumu slimnīca) and a toxicologist, points out that it is dangerous to believe that if several hours have passed after eating mushrooms with no complaints, everything is necessarily fine.

According to the toxicologist, this assumption can be misleading, because poisoning symptoms caused by certain mushroom species may appear only after a delay. In other words, the absence of symptoms shortly after eating does not guarantee that poisoning has not occurred or will not develop later.

Danger is not limited to forests

Stašinskis also draws attention to the fact that mushrooms do not grow only in forests. They can also be found in cemeteries and parks, meaning that people who pick mushrooms near cities or populated areas — not just deep in the woods — can also encounter potentially poisonous species.

The toxicologist stresses the importance of understanding how significant the actual risk of mushroom poisoning is, and warns against false reassurance from the fact that nothing bad has happened shortly after eating. Such warnings from intensive care specialists are grounded in their experience treating patients who require help specifically during the mushroom season.
