Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang received an unexpected phone call from President Donald Trump right in the middle of the company's staff all-hands meeting on Thursday, according to three sources who witnessed the moment and spoke to Wired.
The meetings typically take place at Nvidia's Santa Clara, California headquarters, with Huang appearing on stage to take questions from in-person staff while thousands of remote employees watch via livestream. During Thursday's meeting, Huang's mobile phone rang and he stepped aside to take the call. Staff in the room could clearly hear Trump's distinctive voice through Huang's still-active onstage microphone, though they could not make out what was being said. Huang returned to the stage in under a minute and resumed the meeting.
An Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment on the incident, but the interruption reportedly became a topic of conversation among staff afterward.
A congratulatory post
Later that same day, Trump posted on social media congratulating Huang on Nvidia's "incredible" quarterly sales and its optimistic forecast for the coming year. The company had reported second-quarter revenue of $96 billion on Wednesday, a 106 percent increase over the same period last year.
Huang frequently travels to Washington to lobby officials on behalf of Nvidia's business interests, including chip sales and AI infrastructure, and has previously held closed-door meetings with Trump. The timing of this call was notable: earlier the same day, Nvidia announced the creation of a new employee-funded political action committee that will donate to federal candidates as debate over AI policy intensifies. Nvidia and the Trump administration have not always seen eye to eye on regulating open AI models or the sale of advanced chips to China.
Separately, Nvidia has reportedly been in advanced talks to acquire Hugging Face, an open-source platform that provides AI datasets, models and development tools to software engineers. Reports suggest the deal could be valued at more than $13 billion and would likely require approval from US antitrust regulators.
