US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday, 24 October, in a post on his Truth Social platform that he is weighing a move of the White House press briefing room to a different location he considers "less annoying". The matter is significant because the room is where the administration meets reporters, and relocating it would change how media work inside the White House.

In the post, Trump rejected reports that he intends to eliminate the press room and restore the historic swimming pool in its place. He said it had never even crossed his mind to do "such a foolish thing". At the same time, he acknowledged that he might move what he called "Fake News" to a less annoying spot, adding that the old pool could never be brought back.

Earlier signals

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that in August Trump urged then-press secretary Karoline Leavitt to move press conferences out of the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room in the White House. The idea was never carried out.

Tension between the president and the media

On 18 September, Trump announced a ban on Politico, CNN and MS NOW from accessing the White House, a step legal experts described as unconstitutional. The three outlets filed a federal lawsuit against the president on 21 September.

The television networks ABC, CBS and NBC, along with the Trump-friendly Fox News, later declared a boycott of official events. The New York Times and The Washington Post joined the protest by ceasing to publish official photographs and materials connected to the president.
