Trump cancels Iowa and Kansas rallies, turns to 'tele-rallies' instead

US President Donald Trump has called off his planned final campaign events in Iowa and Kansas. The Republican National Committee says broadcasts will be held in at least 20 states instead.

US President Donald Trump has cancelled his last in-person campaign rallies in the states of Iowa and Kansas ahead of the midterm elections to the US Congress. In their place, Republicans will use so-called "tele-rallies", in which Trump's address is broadcast to voters.

The Republican National Committee (RNC), the party's national organisation, announced that such broadcasts will take place in at least 20 states. That means Trump's message will reach far more states than two in-person events could cover.

The source does not say why Trump cancelled the rallies, and it does not list the states where the broadcasts will be held.

Why it matters

Replacing in-person rallies with telephone-based events changes how the party uses the president's public backing at the close of the campaign. Midterms decide part of the makeup of the US Congress, so the final campaign events matter to both major parties.
