Trump Threatens France with 100% Tariff on Wine Imports Over Digital Tax
US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 100% tariff on French wine and champagne imports if France does not repeal its 2019 digital services tax targeting American tech companies.

France adopted a 3% digital services tax in 2019, applying to companies with global annual revenue over 750 million euros and French revenue over 25 million euros. This tax primarily affects major US technology firms. President Trump stated he asked French President Emmanuel Macron "not to impose taxes on American companies." If France proceeds, Trump warned he will have no choice but to impose a 100% tariff on all French champagne and wine imports. Trump emphasized that Macron simply needs to repeal the tax to avoid such pressure. The US is the largest importer of French wine and alcoholic beverages, and a 15% tariff on French and European wine imports is already in place. Macron is scheduled to meet Trump before the G7 summit in Evian.
