Trump says Iran truce is 'over' as US hits 170 targets over two nights

The US military has struck 170 Iranian targets in the past 48 hours, aiming to degrade Iran's ability to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran retaliated against US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, while President Trump declared the interim truce over.

The US Central Command (Centcom) has announced that over the last two nights it struck 170 Iranian targets. The bombing was intended to 'further degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners in the strait of Hormuz,' according to the military.

Iranian state media reported explosions in several cities, mostly in the south of the country. In response, Iran’s army launched retaliatory strikes on US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. This regional crossfire, sparked by a struggle for control over the narrow strategic shipping channel, threatens to unravel an interim truce between the US and Iran.

Both sides have vowed to escalate retaliations if provocations continue. US President Donald Trump warned that worse could come, while Iran has threatened to expand its attacks against US bases in the region. Speaking at the Nato summit in Turkey, Trump said he considers the memorandum of understanding with Iran to be 'over', adding: 'I don’t want to deal with them.'

Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, vowed that the Strait of Hormuz would remain under Iranian management. 'The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened only under Iranian arrangements, not through US threats,' he wrote on X.

Iran’s health ministry reported that the recent wave of US strikes killed 14 people and injured 78 others. Of the injured, 47 remain hospitalized, while the others have been discharged after medical treatment. The strikes came as Iran prepares to bury the late supreme leader Ali Khamenei in his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran. The burial follows a multi-day funeral ceremony that attracted millions of mourners across various cities in both Iran and Iraq.
