Trump announces blockade of Iranian ports and 20% fee on Strait of Hormuz transit
US President Donald Trump stated that the United States will restore the blockade of Iran's seaports and impose a 20% fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday, July 13, via his Truth Social platform that the United States will reinstate a naval blockade of Iran's ports and levy a 20% charge on all cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Trump emphasized that the strait is open and will remain open, regardless of Iranian involvement.
Trump declared that from now on, the US will be known as the "guardian of the Strait of Hormuz," ensuring fair and open access for all nations. As compensation for this role, the US will collect 20% of the value of all goods shipped through the strait to cover the costs of securing the volatile region. The president noted that the process and organizational measures will commence immediately.
This announcement follows Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) statement on July 12 closing the waterway. In response, Trump said the US had carried out strikes against Iran. Earlier, Trump had claimed that Iran approached the US seeking to resume negotiations.
