Three people died while attempting to cross the English Channel on a small boat, French authorities said Thursday. The vessel was spotted around 6 a.m. off the coast of Dunkirk, with all three occupants unresponsive. Rescue teams brought them to shore, where paramedics pronounced them dead.

Wednesday had been one of the busiest days for small boat crossings this year, with a steady stream of attempts amid warm, sunny weather and calm sea conditions.

Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, said on Wednesday that the government's plan to curb Channel crossings was "working" but added that there was "more to do." The latest tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting the crossing.
