US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News that he has no regrets about ordering strikes on Iran back in February, adding that he would take the same action again if faced with the same choice.
Trump said he does not generally believe in regretting decisions, stressing that the strikes stripped Iran of its ability to build a nuclear weapon.
Warning about nuclear capability
The president repeated an earlier claim that, had the United States not intervened militarily, Iran would by now possess nuclear weapons. He argued that in such a scenario, Iran would have been capable of wiping out the entire Middle East and then striking American cities as well.
Trump also said Iran's ruling regime is currently barely staying afloat and is facing serious internal problems.
Context of the conflict
Trump's comments come against the backdrop of an escalating regional conflict. On September 9, Iran said it had struck ten vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, after the United States had sunk five Iranian oil tankers. This marked the largest recorded wave of mutual attacks on shipping by both sides since the war began six months ago.
