Turkish Airlines: Entry into Russian Airspace Was a One-Off Weather-Related Decision

Turkish Airlines has clarified the circumstances surrounding its July 12 flight TK1424 from Tallinn to Istanbul, which briefly entered Kaliningrad airspace. The airline explained on Thursday that the flight was originally planned without entering Russian airspace, but the crew encountered adverse weather conditions, including convective activity and thunderstorms.

In coordination with air traffic control and following international aviation procedures, the aircraft performed a limited weather-avoidance maneuver, during which it briefly entered Kaliningrad airspace before continuing to its destination. The airline noted that such weather-related route adjustments are common in aviation and are made in real time by the crew with safety as the top priority.

Turkish Airlines confirmed that it does not normally use Russian airspace for EU flights and that this deviation was a one-time, short-term operational adjustment caused specifically by the weather conditions on that day. The airline stated that briefly entering Kaliningrad airspace was the only suitable option to ensure passenger safety and a smooth flight.

The company also mentioned that no similar route changes have been made before or after on this flight path, underscoring that this was an exceptional case driven solely by the weather.
