Uber to lay off 3,300 employees, 10% of global workforce

Uber announced it will cut about 3,300 jobs, roughly 10% of its global headcount, as part of a restructuring aimed at reducing management layers and boosting investment in ride-sharing, delivery and robotaxi operations.

Uber has announced plans to lay off approximately 3,300 employees, representing about 10% of its worldwide workforce. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi informed staff of the decision in an internal email sent Wednesday, which was later published online. Bloomberg was first to report on the planned cuts.

Fewer management layers

According to the email, the layoffs form part of a broader restructuring effort that will reduce the number of managers by 20%. Some employees who previously held management positions will move into individual contributor roles instead. Uber also plans to cut by half the number of teams consisting of only one or two people, and will remove staff positioned more than seven levels below the CEO in the company hierarchy.

Merging divisions

Khosrowshahi's email stated that Uber will merge its engineering, science and delivery divisions into a single structure. The company will also unify its delivery operations, which had previously been split across restaurants, retail and direct-delivery business lines.

Remote work curtailed

The restructuring will also affect remote work policy, with fewer than 1% of Uber employees permitted to work remotely going forward. In the email, Khosrowshahi acknowledged that the company's rapid growth in recent years had introduced added complexity — more management layers, more coordination needs and fragmented ownership — structures he said no longer suit Uber's current scale.

Uber had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication. The layoffs are expected to affect the company's ride-sharing, delivery and robotaxi divisions, areas where Uber intends to increase investment going forward.
